Examples of Student Learning

I have attached a test that I wrote for the students based upon the latter part of the Age of Exploration unit (see Unit Plan). The test consisted of four short answer questions and two short essay questions. The second short essay question required a bit of artistry on the students' part. The test was open note, but the questions were such that students had to use their own critical thinking skills. The answers to the essay questions were not in their notes.

Also attached are four of the students' answer sheets. After I graded the tests, I passed them back and allowed them to take their tests home over the weekend to improve their scores. I did this since I realized that different students process information at different speeds. I discovered that several students seemed to know the material but just did not have time to write their answers within the 50 minutes of class. Several did not need to return their tests for a better grade, but some did anyway. Several who did not do so well, did return their tests. Others were content with their grades. The first answered all questions correctly, The second did well, but decided to get a better grade. The third did not do so well and took the test home to improve, and did. The last is an example of someone who could have done better but chose not to take the opportunity to improve their score.
